From Bicentennial to 250: It’s Time to Bring Back America’s Patriotic Spirit

Back in 1976, America’s Bicentennial wasn’t just a date on the calendar. It was a nationwide phenomenon.
From small towns to big cities, people across the country took part in one way or another. Communities formed local committees, organized events, restored historic places, staged reenactments, celebrated music and culture, and looked ahead to the future with real patriotic energy.

This 16mm film, “Bicentennial U.S.A.” produced by the American Revolution Bicentennial Commission, captures that spirit. It shows how deeply Americans embraced the 200th anniversary of the United States and how the celebration reached into every corner of the nation.

The film highlights the three major themes of the Bicentennial: Heritage ’76, focusing on the past; Festival U.S.A., focusing on the present; and Horizon ’76, focusing on the future. It also features a brief segment with John Warner, administrator of the nation’s Bicentennial, filmed inside the National Archives in Washington, D.C.

Now, as America approaches its 250th anniversary, it feels like we are missing some of that same national excitement and shared patriotic spirit.

Maybe it’s time to change that.

Here’s a shorter version for Facebook:

In 1976, America’s Bicentennial was a true nationwide event. People everywhere took part with pride, excitement, and patriotism. Watching this old Bicentennial film makes one thing clear: the 250th anniversary should feel a whole lot bigger than it does right now. Maybe it’s time to change that.
