A Little-Known Revolutionary Story From Jefferson County, New York

As America approaches its 250th anniversary, most people think of Boston or Philadelphia when they think about the Revolution.

But Northern New York has its own chapter.

For years during the Revolutionary War, the British occupied Carlton Island on the St. Lawrence River, operating out of Fort Haldimand and controlling one of the most strategic waterways in North America.

Then something very Northern New York happened.

After the British pulled out, a small group of American militia rowed out to the island and reclaimed it for the young United States.

No massive battle.
No famous generals.

🇺🇸 As the nation celebrates 250 years of independence, Jefferson County can proudly say our river, our islands, and our people were part of the story.
